| New Coating Turns Nanotubes Into Dense, Strong Batteries | |
|
New Coating Turns Nanotubes Into Dense, Strong Batteries A blazing coating lets microscopic carbon nanotubes generate electricity Engineers at MIT have devised what they call a new way of producing electricity. By coating a microscopic carbon nanotube with a layer of fuel and igniting one end with a spark or laser, they're able to send a wave of heat shooting through the nanotube's interior. This thermal wave pushes electrons in its path, generating a significant electric current. Prototypes already have energy density 100 times greater than lithium-ion batteries, and they can be stored indefinitely without leaking charge. The researchers are now investigating optimal fuels and, to make the system reusable, will have to invent a way to automatically apply a fresh layer of fuel after the first burns away. How It Works: 1. Heat the Tube. One end of a microscopic carbon nanotube, coated with reactive fuel, is ignited by a laser. 2. Herd the Particles. A wave of heat races through the inside of the tube, pushing electrons toward the other end. 3. Harvest the Energy. The movement of the electrons forms an electric current. |
| Tiny Battery Embedded In a Nanowire Is the Smallest Battery Yet | ||
![]() |
Nanotechnology promises to enable tiny, intricate circuits powering devices on any surface. But unless they’re harvesting energy from something like a heartbeat, the devices can only be as small as the smallest battery. Now researchers at Rice University have combined the two, packing an entire lithium-ion battery into a single nanowire. The developers say it’s as small as such a device can possibly get. Researchers led by Rice University professor Pulickel Ajayan, (Ajayan Group Nanomaterials Laboratory at Rice University.), built a hybrid energy storage device, which serves as a battery and a supercapacitor. The first version sandwiched an electrolyte between a nickel/tin anode and a cathode made of a polymer called polyaniline. The cathode also served as a supercapacitor, storing lithium ions in bulk, as this writeup by Rice University explains. The prototype proved that lithium ions would move through the electrolyte and into the cathode. The research, (Multisegmented Au-MnO2/Carbon Nanotube Hybrid Coaxial Arrays for High-Power Supercapacitor Applications), is published. (PDF format) Story via PhysOrg journal ACS Nano Letters. Ted Sargent is a pioneer in solar science. He's working on solar technology that could literally be woven into every aspect of daily life, from our clothes to our roads, using what is known as a spray-on solar cell. The implications for our energy systems are profound. As Ted says, "Solar energy is not just an exciting science problem, but an incredibly important human problem." Ted is working on solar nanotechnology with the potential to make solar energy very cheap and allow society to collect it on a huge scale. Currently, solar technology costs more to build and install than most people are willing to pay. Solar panels, for example, the technology most commonly associated with solar energy, are installed on your rooftop. The cost of collecting one kilowatt per hour of solar energy (about a third of the electricity an average household uses on any given day) is about $11,000. |

Printing Solar Cells With New Nanomaterials. (Nano Website), New materials make it possible to produce photovoltaic cells on paper or fabric, nearly as simply as printing a document. Graduate student Miles Barr hold a flexible and foldable array of solar cells that have been printed on a sheet of paper. The sheet of paper looks like any other document that might have just come spitting out of an office printer, with an array of colored rectangles printed over much of its surface. But then a researcher picks it up, clips a couple of wires to one end, and shines a light on the paper.
The paper is co-authored by Professor Karen Gleason the Alexander and I. Michael Kasser Professor of Chemical Engineering; Professor of Electrical Engineering Vladimir Bulovic & graduate student Miles Barr; and six other students and postdocs. The work was supported by the Eni-MIT Alliance Solar Frontiers Program and the National Science Foundation.
While you’re up, print me a solar cell, MIT. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), MIT-developed materials make it possible to produce photovoltaic cells on paper or fabric, nearly as simply as printing a document. The new technology, developed by a team of researchers at MIT, is reported in a paper in the journal Advanced Materials, published online July 8, 2011. The technique represents a major departure from the systems used until now to create most solar cells, which require exposing the substrates to potentially damaging conditions, either in the form of liquids or high temperatures. The new printing process uses vapors, not liquids, and temperatures less than 120 degrees Celsius. These “gentle” conditions make it possible to use ordinary untreated paper, cloth or plastic as the substrate on which the solar cells can be printed.

| Turning Sunlight into Liquid Fuels |
Berkeley, CA For millions of years, green plants have employed photosynthesis to capture energy from sunlight and convert it into electrochemical energy. A goal of scientists has been to develop an artificial version of photosynthesis that can be used to produce liquid fuels from carbon dioxide and water. Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have now taken a critical step towards this goal with the discovery that nano-sized crystals of cobalt oxide can effectively carry out the critical photosynthetic reaction of splitting water molecules. Cobalt oxide nanocrystals can effectively be used to split water molecules, one of the half reactions critical to an artifical photosynthesis system for producing liquid fuels from sunlight. An aqueous solution contains silica particles that have been embedded with photooxidizing cobalt oxide nanocrystals plus a sensitizer to allow the water-splitting reaction to be driven by visible light. When laser light hits the solution it turns blue as the sensitizer absorbs light. Bubbles soon begin to form as oxygen gas is released from the spilt water molecules Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) More links about Nanobots, nanorobots and Nanotechnology Danger |

Development of nanoelectronics and highly efficient solar cell Danish nanophysicists have developed a new method for manufacturing the cornerstone of nanotechnology research - nanowires. The discovery has great potential in solar power. PhD student Peter Krogstrup, Nano-Science Center at the Niels Bohr Institute, developed the method during his dissertation. We have changed the recipe for producing nanowires. This means that we can produce nanowires that contain two different semiconductors, namely gallium indium arsenide and indium arsenide. It is a big breakthrough, because for first time on a nanoscale, we can combine the good characteristics of the two materials, thus gaining new possibilities for the electronics of the future, explains Peter Krogstrup.

Department of Energy and Climate Change. Climate change is not only a massive threat to the global environment, it is also perhaps the greatest economic challenge facing us in the twenty-first century. It demands an urgent and radical response across the developed and developing world. At the same time, the United Kingdom needs to secure clean, safe, affordable energy to heat and power our homes and businesses. Creating a low carbon and resource efficient world means making major structural changes to the way we work and live, including how we source, manage and use our energy.DECC exists to take the lead in tackling these challenges, and reflects the fact that climate change and energy policies are inextricably linked – two thirds of our emissions come from the energy we use. It is based on a new chemical process of releasing the latent energy of the hydrogen atom, the BlackLight Process, with the formation of a prior undiscovered form of hydrogen called "hydrino." (More...) BlackLight Power, Inc. is the inventor of a novel catalytic chemical
process, the BlackLight Process, of causing the latent energy stored in
the hydrogen atom to be released as a new primary energy source.
This allows the negatively charged electron that is otherwise in a
stable orbit to move closer to the naturally attracting, positively
charged nucleus to release large amounts of energy with the formation of
a prior undiscovered form of hydrogen called "hydrino". This
patented process of releasing chemical energy from hydrogen generates
power, heat, and proprietary new hydrino compounds. BlackLight

very efficient at liberating energy from forming hydrinos and can be

and the only consumable, the hydrogen fuel, would be obtained ultimately
from water due to the enormous net energy release relative to
combustion. |

Townsend Brown, Stan Meyer and others have shown us it is possible to have all the power we need without burning noxious oil, coal, and gas or risking nuclear damage. For 100 years, however, there have been no significant changes in the way we generate power. Even now, we continue to pollute and pay large corporations for the power we need to live our lives. We can no longer afford this "business as usual" attitude. We can not wait for big business to decide to do the right thing on our behalf. We must insist on having and using new technologies that can turn this energy crisis around - starting right now! We must embrace those technologies that are clean and sustainable for centuries to come, and supply them to All peoples on the earth - now! |

Reinventing the Gasoline Engine. Precise combustion control cuts fuel consumption by more than 30 percent. new engine concept developed by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison could cut fuel consumption by about 30 percent in cars and by almost 20 percent in heavy trucks. In gas-powered cars, the new design would add little to the cost of the engine. In heavy-duty trucks, it would substantially reduce costs by eliminating the need for expensive after-treatment systems to reduce emissions. Test engine: Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison used this Caterpillar heavy-duty diesel engine to test a new high-efficiency combustion concept. Credit: Derek Splitter. The concept, which has been demonstrated in test engines, involves precisely mixing two different fuels in the combustion chamber, which gives greater control over both the timing and duration of combustion. It could provide a way to meet fuel economy regulations without the more expensive electric motors and batteries found in hybrid vehicles (although for still greater efficiency, the new design could be incorporated into a hybrid vehicle). The new engine concept is made possible by precise electronic fuel injection and advances in computer simulations. "We discovered this process using advanced computer modeling, which allowed us to identify the recipe for optimal mixing of the fuels," says Rolf Reitz, a professor of mechanical engineering at UW-Madison.

'Artificial leaf' Turns sunlight into fuel. US scientists have developed an "artificial leaf" that converts sunlight into a chemical fuel that could be stored and used later, according to a study. When placed in a container of water, the silicon solar cell -- with catalytic materials on each side -- generates oxygen bubbles on one side and hydrogen bubbles on the other, which can be separated and collected. The gases could then be fed into a fuel cell that recombines them into water while producing an electric current, according to lead researcher Daniel Nocera, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT Artificial leaf The device is the subject of a paper in the journal Science co-authored by six researchers from Sun Catalytix, a solar-energy firm founded by Nocera. The Nocera Group studies the energy conversion in biology and chemistry. Efforts have focused on understanding the reactions of multielectron, proton-coupled transformations of energy poor substrates. From this platform, the group has successfully used solar light to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Recently, they have realized artificial photosynthesis by the solar splitting of water under benign conditions. In doing so, the Nocera group can now provide solar energy/storage and clean water to the poor and those of the non-legacy world. Wireless Solar Water Splitting (Science Mag), Using Silicon-Based Semiconductors and Earth-Abundant Catalysts escribe the development of solar water-splitting cells comprising earth-abundant elements that operate in near-neutral pH conditions, both with and without connecting wires. The cells consist of a triple junction, amorphous silicon photovoltaic interfaced to hydrogen and oxygen evolving catalysts made from an alloy of earth-abundant metals and a cobalt|borate catalyst, respectively. The devices described herein carry out the solar-driven water-splitting reaction at efficiencies of 4.7% for a wired configuration and 2.5% for a wireless configuration when illuminated with 1 sun of AM 1.5 simulated sunlight. Fuel-forming catalysts interfaced with light-harvesting semiconductors afford a pathway to direct solar-to-fuels conversion that captures many of the basic functional elements of a leaf.
Microbes work to mop up oil - The Scientist - Magazine of the Life Sciences
Deep sea microbe populations are evolving in response to the Deepwater Horizon disaster, helping to digest the oil that continues to contaminate the Gulf of Mexico, according to a study on the ScienceExpress website.
The findings provide tantalizing clues that the ocean is evolving in a way that will help it heal from the massive spill, but it's still early days, said biogeochemist John Farrington of the School of Marine Science and Technology at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, who was not involved in the research. By sampling the microbial communities both within and beyond the oil plume, Terry Hazen of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and his colleagues found increases in several bacteria varieties within the oil's reach, nearly all of which are related to species known to degrade hydrocarbons, like those found in oil. They further determined that these bacteria appear to be degrading the hydrocarbons.

| CSCI: Climate Savers Computing Initiative Save energy Save money. | ||
| What exactly is the Climate Savers Computing Initiative? Started by Google and Intel in 2007, the Climate Savers Computing Initiative is a nonprofit group of eco-conscious consumers, businesses and conservation organizations. The Initiative was started in the spirit of WWFa's Climate Savers program which has mobilized over a dozen companies since 1999 to cut carbon dioxide emissions, demonstrating that reducing emissions is good business. Th goal is to promote development, deployment and adoption of smart technologies that can both improve the efficiency of a computer's power delivery and reduce the energy consumed when the computer is in an inactive state. Saving energy at home. Using power management features on your computer can save more than 600 KWh of electricity and more than $60 a year in energy costs. That equates to nearly half a ton of CO2' more than lowering your home thermostat by two degrees Fahrenheit in the winter or replacing six standard light bulbs with compact fluorescents . Follow the steps to ensure your computer is operating more efficiently. |

Bridging the gap between reality and official science
General notes about the information on this page
There are arguments against climate change and even those who argue against mankind's impact on any climate change that may be taken place e.g. it is a normal cycle in the sun spots, the earth has a very long, (hundreds of years), cycle of colder then hotter weather, etc....
This page is probably more likely to feature videos that argue that climate change is taken place and that mankind having an impact on it. They will try to present information that hopefully will reduce any impact mankind is having on the climate.
Generally the information presented will try to show how to reduce energy consumption by mankind and this is thought to be a positive thing in that it could reduce energy costs to the consumer.
Remember that vast amount of money, (many billions), power and jobs could be at stake by both those arguing for and those arguing against mankind's impact on any possible climate change.
Any information presented as facts maybe therefore have bias and any data presented may by sated in error or be skewed to favour one argument or the other..
You are advised to listen to arguments from all sides.

Other Links, Overunity. Free Energy
Overunity, (The Production of Free Energy, Perpetual Motion, higher energy Output than what is put into the system). Generally goes against The Law Thermodynamics. Overunity it is similar to a Perpetual Motion Machine this is said not to be really possible. For some people who may believe the have developed such Overunity, (Perpetual Motion Machines, Free Energy), when further independent research takes place it is usually discovered that true overunity has not taken place and a higher amount of energy is input into the system than is gained from the system. For example remember to include: the energy taken to make the machine, energy taken starting and stopping the machine, energy stored in magnets that may be used, gravity, friction, air and water pressure, electrical energy, (radio waves, etc), heat, temperature differences and temperature variations, static electric, (and many more energy use issues which may be overlooked), etc.... Perpetual motion violates either the first law of thermodynamics, the second law of thermodynamics, or both. The first law of thermodynamics is essentially a statement of conservation of energy. The second law can be phrased in several different ways, the most intuitive of which is that heat flows spontaneously from hotter to colder places; the most well known statement is that entropy tends to increase, or at the least stay the same; another statement is that no heat engine (an engine which produces work while moving heat between two separate places) can be more efficient than a Carnot heat engine. As a special case of this, any machine operating in a closed cycle cannot only transform thermal energy to work in a region of constant temperature. Machines which are claimed not to violate either of the two laws of thermodynamics but rather to generate energy from unconventional sources are sometimes referred to as perpetual motion machines, although they are generally considered not to meet the standard criteria for the name. By way of example, clocks and other low-power machines, such as Cox's timepiece, have been designed to run on the differences in barometric pressure or temperature between night and day. Such a machine has a source of energy, albeit one which is not readily apparent so that it seems to run on nothing. One example could be Power without batteries. Crystal Set Radio, (sometime known as a cats whisker radio), this gets it's power from outside the system as radio wave, therefore it is not truly fee energy. Magnets are not Free Energy, think about the energy it takes to manufacture, transport, build systems and how that energy has an impact on the environment. Add to this usually the energy needed to start moving the magnets, (maybe gravity, sort distance, is used), or and electrical energy, and so-on...

A brief demonstration and explanation of electromagnetic induction, the phenomenon at the heart of all electricity power stations. The "generator" is a home-made prop, a prototype that doesn't work very well. A circuit t built because it is felt it was a more effective demonstration than getting an ammeter needle to flicker as is done in traditional classroom demonstrations of this effect. One of the students is building a more sophisticated version with gears, interchangeable magnets and coils, and 4mm connectors to allow it to be connected to a voltmeter - which should make it much better for teaching purposes. This works better than diving straight into talking about wires cutting lines of flux etc. Of course, I then go on to explain the topic in more detail, but this simple demonstration serves to supply the basic points they need to learn at GCSE in a memorable way

Scientists invent heat-regulating building material. A new material that can retain and release heat according to specific temperature requirements could make a significant difference to the cost of heating and cooling buildings, scientists say. Researchers based at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) believe their invention — which could be used in existing structures as well as new builds — could offer considerable energy savings. The novel non-deformed energy storage phase change material (PCM) has the unique advantage of possessing a larger energy storage capacity with faster thermal response than existing materials and could be cheaply manufactured.

Britain needs to spend more than £110bn on new electricity supplies to keep the nation's lights on, (Year 2011, July the 12th) he Government has claimed. Energy Minister Chris Huhne has warned that with ageing power stations closing down, urgent market reforms are needed. One of the key proposals in a White Paper published on Tuesday, is the introduction of contracts which guarantee long-term stable prices for electricity from low-carbon sources. These include nuclear power stations and offshore wind farms. If the price of electricity outstrips the prices guaranteed in the contracts, companies will have to pay back the difference, preventing a windfall for low-carbon generators.... According to Mr Huhne, the current electricity market is unable to meet the demand - and, without action, risks of costly blackouts will be higher at the end of the decade. Department of Energy & Climate Change. Energy Market Reform White Paper
EMR White Paper will deliver “cleaner, greener” energy, say Huhne. Energy Minister Chris Huhne unveiled the Government’s White Paper on Electricity Market Reform (EMR) today, outlining the first steps in the largest shake-up of the market since privatisation and setting the framework for low carbon energy at the lowest cost to consumers.
